does anyone have a good recommendation for a first boat? i started kayaking with my college club, and am now up to class III rivers, feeling pretty solid. i have been using an RPM, which is great, but i need to get a boat of my own--first time!! i am hoping to advance quickly, so i don't want to get a boat that i will outgrow in a year or so. i am a girl, 120 lbs and 5'6", and am interested in a used boat. (sorry but my college budget does not allow for a $2k investment in all new equipment.) any suggestions? kelly

Just about anything built in the last 4 years that has less then about 47 gallons of volume and isn't too expensive should work for you. Most Of the manufacturers have made boats for people of your weight. If there's any clubs around, that's a good place to check for used boats. Research at this link: http://www.whitewaterkayak.com/links.htm Good luck, Bob Tresa wrote: > does anyone have a good recommendation for a first boat? i started > kayaking with my college club, and am now up to class III rivers, > feeling pretty solid. i have been using an RPM, which is great, but i > need to get a boat of my own--first time!! i am hoping to advance > quickly, so i don't want to get a boat that i will outgrow in a year or > so. i am a girl, 120 lbs and 5'6", and am interested in a used boat. > (sorry but my college budget does not allow for a $2k investment in all > new equipment.) any suggestions? > > kelly

If you can find a good used Riot Booster, that would be a great planing hull boat for you. At your height/weight, I'd recommend the Booster 55. The Booster's a fun boat that won't limit you too much, but is easy to paddle and roll, and is great for up and coming novices/intermediates. There are a ton of used planing hull boats out there, check the web and go to Boatertalk.com and look at the Gearswap page. You will love a planing hull boat. The RPM while a great beginner's boat is the old displacement style hull. Planing hulls are so much cooler I don't think any manufacturere even makes a displacement hull anymore! John Kuthe...
