Subject: Rolling and open boat

Hey ya'll me and my bud matt finally decided to learn to roll an open boat
and this past Monday
went to the GCA (Ga Canoe Assoc) roll practice pool session to start
training. I am a very visual person and decided that it would be a good idea
to video the training so we/I could learn from it. The link below is a low
res video I did with my digital Nikon still camera of my bud Matt while he
practiced and Allan Hedden was behind shaking and upsetting the boat to
simulate rough water. I won't be starting my practice for a coupla weeks and
I find this video very helpful to learn the techniques besides it's also fun
to watch. Czeck it out at

Its WMV video and it's 2.7 Mb. It'll take a few seconds to load if you have
DSL but on dial up it could take quite a bit longer.

Foote's "The Open Canoe Roll". It is half an hour of professionally
produced video showing, repeatedly and step-by-step, successful rolls
executed with perfect form, by the formost whitewater open-canoe
instructor in North America.

Hey it's alot more fun and much cheaper (free) to do my own video and
actually listen to someone teaching and giving advice tailored specifically
to the observable mistakes being made. I wish the pool hadn't been so
cacophonous and I would been able to also record Allan's instructions to
Matt.

Actually I've known about Bob's Canoe Rolling vid on Milt's site and I
prolly would have ordered it a while back had we planned ahead to train to
roll an open boat cept it was just a last minute thing and we just went for
it.

Thanks for sharing, Pepe! That was fun to watch. I still remember the
first time I saw an open boater flip and roll up instantly on a river
(That was Steve Frazier, who's recently departed from canoeing
alltogether :-( ).
That's something else than throwing a playboat around. :-)

Hey, Pepe; can you make another video like that, but from the offside (the
side the paddler is falling over onto)? I'd like to see more of how he sets
up for the roll as he is going over.

This is another video I filmed the same night of another guy at the pool. He
does a coupla rolls filmed from the bow. Then does one last one filmed from
the offside. From what I can tell the set up is basically the same on or
offside where you lean forward and lay the paddle powerside up on top of the
front bags and then when you're under you swing back and up and then push
down as you swing the paddle forward as you would on a low brace. The fellow
in the yellow boat seems like he just pushesd down rather than push and
swing forward.
To me the pushing down and forward makes more sense as you would be coming
out with your paddle in the forward position set up for a foward power
stroke.
Also notice how this guy has the paddle further from the boat and how he
basically starts his push with the paddle higher and somtimes even out of
the water giving him much greater leverage and power and making the roll and
least from the observer point seem much more effortless. We do have to give
credit to my bud Matt in the other video as this was his very first time
rolling a boat. I thought he did great!!
