Just go my 04 Passat TDI wagon. I can't seem to find a place to tie my
kayaks in the front. Has anyone come up with something?

On the passenger side, there's a panel that pops off just below the bumper.
There's a tie down behind that panel. For some reason, it's only on the
passenger side, but at least VW provides something. Check your manual.

BTW - this is true on my friend's '02 (or '03?) Passat, so I'm assuming
it's on the newest ones too.

Are you talking about a bow line? What some people have done is open up the
hood and find a flat place in the the sheet metal where they can drill a
small hole. Then attach a loop of flat webbing that is long enough such
that it sticks out of the hood when it's closed. When you don't need it you
can just fold it back under the hood. It might not work for a Passat but
it's worth checking.

Works with my Jetta TDI. There are already holes in the sheet metal inside
the hood that I tie the flat webbing to, so no drilling required. This is
the third car I've done this with, and it's always been secure and strong.

I've done this as well, although with a 4Runner, not a VW. I found
convenient places on either side of the engine compartment to loop the
flat webbing. Last weekend I hauled a 17' canoe and two sea kayaks,
and, although it looked like something that Spiderman might have rigged,
all the boats were secure for the two hour ride to the launch site.
